Technology
LocateBLE is a flexible and scalable RTLS platform that provides real-time location and tracking of BLE tags inside a building and its outdoor premises. LocateBLE uses BlueUp devices (tags and gateways) but, thanks to its modular architecture, it is compatible with any third-party BLE tag, gateway and scanner. For instance, it can support WiFi Access Points equipped with BLE scanning capability and API communication.
LocateBLE uses RSS (Receive Signal Strength) data and advanced trilateration and filtering algorithms to estimate the position of each BLE tag on a 2D map. Thanks to its simplicity of design and setup, LocateBLE is suitable for a wide range of applications, including access and presence control, personnel safety, automated inventory management, real-time tracking.

Architecture
LocateBLE architecture is based on three main components: BLE tags, BLE locators, LocateBLE software with Positioning Engine and APIs.
BLE tags move within the localization area and continuously broadcast a specific BLE advertising packet.
Fixed BLE locators (constituted by BLE gateways or any other fixed device with BLE scanning function) are installed at known positions inside the localization area. Depending on the environment, BLE locators may have omnidirectional or directive antenna, and can be installed on ceiling or on walls. Each BLE locator receives the signal from BLE tags, and computes RSSI.
BLE locators are connected on a local network (Ethernet LAN is suggested for reliability, but WLAN option is available as well) to a local server where LocateBLE software is installed. LocateBLE is designed as middleware platform, with its proprietary positioning engine (BPE, BlueUp Positioning Engine), web interface for management and monitoring, and integrated open APIs for seamless integration in high-end application software.

Components
Tags
Asset tags and wearable tags are wireless electronic devices that are applied to assets or worn by people to be tracked.
Tags are active devices, equipped with a battery, capable of autonomously transmitting information (unique identifier and any status information, such as battery level) to the locators, using standard BLE advertising packets. Energy-saving modes are implemented for increasing battery life, based on tag motion status.
Locators
Fixed locators are installed at fixed reference points and receive BLE signals from the tags.
BlueUp gateways are used as standard locators but the system is able to support any kind of BLE scanner device with communication APIs.
LocateBLE SW
LocateBLE SW is the core of the system. It integrates BlueUp Positioning Engine (BPE), an advanced location tool based on trilateration and filtering, that allows to compute tag position from RSSI information from each locator. LocateBLE SW comes with an easy-to-use web-based user interface for project setup and management and offers a wide set of free-to-use APIs for HTTP and MQTT to interface the platform with external application software.

In the case of sensor integration, tags or locators can also transmit physical or environmental parameters, such as temperature, humidity, pressure, CO2, together with their unique identifier.
