Hospital innovation and safety: the HEART project

Hospital innovation and safety: the HEART project

BlueUp is proud to be among the partners of the HEART (Hospital Environment Analysis & Real Time Tracking) project, a cutting-edge initiative aimed at improving hospital safety through innovative technological solutions based on IoT and Artificial Intelligence. With a financial support of EUR 122,118.96, BlueUp actively contributes to the development of this innovative technology. The main objective of HEART is the prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI), thus improving the quality of care and reducing risks for patients.

HAI: a challenge for the healthcare sector

HAIs are infections acquired during hospital stays or in other healthcare facilities. These infections represent a significant problem globally, increasing hospital stays, healthcare costs and, in the most serious cases, causing disability or death. It is estimated that HAIs can double the cost of care and increase hospital stays by approximately 6,5 days, with an annual economic impact of approximately 7 billion euros in Europe alone.

The role of HEART in the prevention of HAIs

HEART stands out for the implementation of advanced technologies that allow it to:

  • track patients, healthcare workers and surgical instruments in real time thanks to RTLS (Real-Time Locating System) and Artificial Intelligence;
  • monitor compliance with hygiene procedures, such as hand washing and traffic in the operating room;
  • analyze medical records with advanced AI models for a personalized assessment of the infection risk;
  • generate alarms in the event of non-compliant behavior, ensuring an improvement in patient safety.

The project, which sees the collaboration of BlueUp with the leader Saima Sicurezza S.P.A., Università degli Studi di Siena, Centro Chirurgico Toscano e Fasac Investment Srl, will lead to the creation of an intuitive software for the monitoring and prevention of ICA, facilitating early diagnosis and timely interventions.

From the ATLAS project to HEART: a path of innovation

HEART represents an evolution of the ATLAS project. Launched on 1 September 2020 and co-financed by the POR CREO FESR Toscana 2014-2020, ATLAS has developed a new generation RTLS multisensory platform for the healthcare sector, integrating IoT, Computer Vision, Deep Learning and Edge Computing technologies. This system has significantly improved the management of people flows, staff safety and hospital logistics.

Thanks to the experience gained with ATLAS, BlueUp now contributes strategically to the development of HEART, which represents a further step forward in the digitalization of healthcare. The adoption of advanced technological solutions will make hospital environments safer and more efficient, with tangible benefits for patients and healthcare professionals.
